## Rights and licenses (Rightshold)
Before adding a dependency, image, font, icon, audio, video or dataset to this project, check its license for how
we will use it (commercial app, modified, redistributed, AI training). Use the Rightshold MCP tool check_license
(server https://www.rightshold.com/mcp, no key needed) or POST https://www.rightshold.com/v1/licenses/check with
{"license":"<SPDX id>","intended_use":{"commercial_use":true}}. If the verdict is not "permitted", or the source
has no license, stop and tell me instead of adding it. Record where every asset came from in ASSETS.md.
Things to ask
- Can I use this Google Font in my paid app?
- Is every npm package in this project OK for commercial use?
- I found this image on Unsplash. Can I put it on my landing page?
- Can I use a CC BY-NC song in my YouTube ad?
- Is GPL code OK in my closed-source SaaS?
No editor? One curl
curl -s https://www.rightshold.com/v1/licenses/check -H 'content-type: application/json' -d '{"license":"CC-BY-NC-4.0","intended_use":{"commercial_use":true}}'
Is it free? Do I need to sign up?
Free, with no signup and no key, for license checks, AI-policy reads and the project scan. An account only raises limits and unlocks signed receipts.
Does the scanner upload my code?
No. It reads license fields locally and sends only the license ids (like MIT or GPL-3.0-only) to get a verdict.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is an automated reading of the license text that tells you what is clearly fine and what a human should look at.
